As the pharmaceutical glass industry in China continues its rapid growth, an established industry standard is increasingly needed. An attendee at a seminar on the industry’s development and standards recently presented by the China Pharmaceutical Packing Association said a country-wide standard on specifications for pharmaceutical glass products will be established soon. |

Since July 2005, the association’s glass container committee has been developing the standard, with an aim to reduce the material wastage resulting from the lack of uniformity |

in the shapes and sizes of pharmaceutical glass products.
Products that will fall under the standard include pharmaceutical glass tubes and infusion bottles as well as oral liquid bottles. The standard will play an important role in pushing the overall industry to grow in a healthy way.
To be in line with international standards, China’s pharmaceutical glass industry is advised to set up definite standards for both glass product producers and users, rather than to simply focus on chemistry stability and bio-compatibility of the products.

that due to the low requirements for market entry, China’s pharmaceutical glass industry has been slower than other industries in setting a standrad, and that the initial standard is still subject to further amendments and addenda, to better align with international standards.
