Beijing Double-Crane Pharmaceutical plans to expand production of infusion with plastic bottle packaging

Beijing Double-Crane Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. on July 29 announced a plan to make an additional investment of over 90 million yuan (approx.US$13 million) to build three new production lines for infusion solutions with plastic bottle packaging and expand the existing one at its two infusion production facilities in Anhui and Wuhan. Beijing Double-Crane Pharmaceutical is a Chinese leading generic drug maker specializing in the production of large-volume infusion as well as anti-hypertension and hypoglycemic drugs.

According to the plan, the company will provide 82 million yuan (approx.US$12 million) in loans to Anhui Double-Crane Pharmaceutical to build two new production lines for infusion packaged in plastic bottles and expanding the existing one, and 29 million yuan (approx.US$4.3 million) to Wuhan Binhu Double-Crane Pharmaceutical to build a new one.

Beijing Double-Crane Pharmaceutical will continue to put more resources into structural changes to its infusion

offerings and packaging, in order to meet the company’s annual operating plan for 2008 and accomplish its future development goals. The creation and expansion project will increase Beijing Double-Crane Pharmaceutical’s infusion production lines to over 40 while increasing its production capacity to 1.3 billion bottles/bags.

In addition, the transition to higher-margin plastic infusion bottles is expected to enhance both the firm’s profitability and its core competitiveness, giving it the ability to overwhelmingly dominate China’s domestic large-volume infusion industry.

The infusion maker has invested more than 600 million yuan (approx. US$88 million) in infusion production since 2005. The production lines to be built at the company’s Anhui subsidiary will include the industry’s most advanced automated packaging processes.

Statistics show that production volume in China’s large-volume infusion market has been increasing annually and that demand for infusion stood at 7.1 billion bottles/ bags in 2007. With the acceleration of the medical reform and the

implementation of a national medical insurance program, the overall Chinese pharmaceutical market is expected to grow rapidly with increasing demand for infusion solutions, promoting the further development of the infusion market in the years to come.

The industry is gradually replacing glass bottles with plastic ones. Furthermore, a proportion of glass infusion bottles will be phased out from the infusion market by 2010 as required by the medical technology development planning of the State Food and Drug Administration of China. As a result, some industry analysts believe that based on the current status and development trend of China’s infusion industry, glass packaging will be fully replaced by plastic packaging in the country over the next three to five years. _______________________________
