The groundbreaking ceremony for Suzhou Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd, a new Chinese subsidiary of Japan-based Otsuka Pharmaceutical Group, was held in Suzhou Industrial Park on April 17, with key local government officials in attendance. |

Otsuka Pharmaceutical Group, with 99 companies established worldwide, recorded sales of 853.9 billion yen (approx. US$8.2 billion) in 2007, of which overseas divisions contributed 307.5 billion yen (approx. US$2.9 billion), accounting for 36 per cent of the total. |

Since the opening of China Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd in Tianjin in 1981, the group has established a network of 20 companies throughout China.
The US$78 million first phase of the Suzhou facility, upon completion, will focus on development and production of high quality pharmaceutical products, mainly comprising injections, using innovative technologies and equipment, and will sell these products both in China and abroad.

committee commented that the park’s provision of strong support, favorable policies and an improved environment, enabling manufacturers to realize a quick return on investment, were the main factors influencing the drug makers’ decision to choose the park for the China operations.
